Dersin Amacı: |
To describe the unity of biochemistry, to teach the students the major two macromolecules: proteins and nucleic acids. To let the students understand not only the composition and structure of proteins but also the techniques to analyze proteins. To give the fundamentals for understanding the enzymes and their catalytic activities. To investigate proteins in action (Hemoglobin and Myoglobin) and understand how to regulate protein function. |
Dersin İçeriği: |
Biochemistry as an evolving science, proteins and their composition, structure, analysis, The structure and significance of DNA andRNA, Hemoglobin and Myoglobin as model proteins, Enzymes |
Dersin Öğrenme Çıktıları (ÖÇ): |
- 1- Biochemistry: An Evolving Science: We can learn about human biochemistry by studying mice, yeast, bacteria, or any living organism.
- 2- Protein Composition and Structure: Proteins are macromolecules that play central roles in all the processes of life.
- 3- Exploring Proteins and Proteomes: This part introduces the most important methods used to investigate proteins.
- 4- DNA, RNA, and the Flow of Genetic Information: The nucleic acids serve as the storage forms of genetic information and are critical participants in the elaboration of this information into functional forms.
- 5- Hemoglobin: Portrait of a Protein in Action: This part describes the structure and function relationships of two very important, well-studied proteins: hemoglobin and myoglobin.
- 6- Enzymes: Basic Concepts and Kinetics: A brief overview of the catalytic power and specificity of enzymes.
- 7- Catalytic Strategies: This part describes in detail the structures, active-site configurations, binding of substrates, and catalytic mechanisms of four well-understood enzymes: chymotrypsin, carbonic anhydrase, restriction endonuclease EcoRV, and the ATPase domain of myosin.
- 8- Regulatory Strategies: This part discusses four major types of regulatory mechanisms are discussed in detail: allosteric control, isozymes, reversible covalent modification, and proteolytic activation.
