Course Objectives: To provide students with an understanding of public international law, the basic legal systems that regulate the relations between governments and to examine in detail the legal structure of the international community with the state as its principal actor.
Course Contents: In the first part of the course, after having provided an introduction to the concept of international law, its historical evolution, sources and fundamental principles, the relationship between international law and municipal law, law of treaties, states as primary subjects of international law, sea, air and land as sovereignty areas of state will be discussed.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- The students will have learned historical structure and theory of the International Law.
  • 2- The students will have learned the relationship between International Law and domestic legal systems.
  • 3- The students will have learned the sources of International Law, general principles of law, case law and writings of scholars.
  • 4- The students will have learned sources of international law and the law of treaties.
  • 5- The students will have learned the elements of a treaty, conditions for its validity.
  • 6- The students will have learned reasons for and methods of termination of a treaty
  • 7- The students will have learned the importance and functions of international treaties in Turkish Law.
  • 8- The students will have learned the concept of personality in International Law and definition of a State, its elements and recognition of States in International Law
  • 9- The students will have learned the function of recognition, status of individuals, NGOs, and insurgents in International Law.
  • 10- The students will have learned the status and structure of international organisations and examine specifically the United Nations.
  • 11- The student will have learned the concept of sovereignty, its functions and methods of acquiring sovereignty in International Law.
  • 12- The student will have learned methods and reasons for loosing sovereignty in International Law
  • 13- The students will have learned the methods of protection of citizen by State in international law.
  • 14- The students will have learned the methods of protection of citizen by State in international law.
