Course Objectives: Product design as a tool for competitiveness factor has gained importance as a strategic resource through the 20th century. Design is an important element in the differentiation between competing products. The objective of this course is to help students understand the context of design in a wider aspect through consumer needs and aspiration, market, corporate vision.
Course Contents: The course is structured as to help students to explore the importance of design in a macro scale, exploring design as a part of a whole system of entrepreneurship, marketing, logistics, branding throughout case studies from different industries. The course on one hand helps coordinating the multidisciplinary structure of design and its contribution to the business world, as well as helps exploring contemporary issues such as innovation, branding, creative culture, design thinking, consumption, corporate decision mechanisms, corporate vision. Course materials consist of theoretical readings on the design management studies including various national and international case studies.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- 1. Have knowledge and skills on the relations of design activity in general and the product development processes in a corporate enterprise.
  • 2- 2. Have knowledge on topics as; product development, branding, brand management, corporate identity, product identity.
  • 3- 3. Evaluate design input and design resources throughout the product development processes, develop strategic decisions.
  • 4- 4. Have the knowledge on the national and international consumption dynamics and have the skills to translate design knowledge into project management processes.
  • 5- 5. Make analysis on design oriented strategies in corporate structures.
  • 6- 6. Design a design work plan and manage the process.
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: Lectures, supported by slides Film screening Readings Field visits Invited lecturers (max. 3) A mid-term exam will be made with open reading materials. Every student will submit a research paper as a final exam via blackboard learning unit. The topic will focus on the design management processes on chosen corporate brand, company, and product or designer-design team. Students are assigned with readings, site observations and field trip due to the subject of the following week and are expected to be prepared for in-class discussions and critical questions on the material
