Course Objectives: ● Providing students with a ground up understanding of photography. ● Making students get familiar with contemporary photography, its vocabulary and aesthetics. ● Introducing camera basics and essential tools of photography.
Course Contents: This class aims to provide the students with the knowledge, tools and experience necessary to work comfortably with the medium of photography. This class will constitute theoretical lectures, technical demonstrations, roundtable discussions and feedback sessions.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- Making students proficient in developing photography based projects from start to finish.
  • 2- Creating opportunities for students to implement photography into their design practice.
  • 3- Improving students' presentation skills.
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: Learning activities include lectures, roundtable discussions, feedback sessions and technical demonstrations. Students are required to present their assignments to the class during the feedback sessions. No presentation will result in a reduced final grade. (-25 points) Presentation quality of the assignments will contribute to the final score of an assignment. Students are required to submit the assignments on the due date. Participation is worth 10% . Project 01 is worth 10% Project 02 is worth 15% Project 03(midterm) is worth 20% Final Project is worth 40%

3 (Module I: History of Photography & Contemporary Photography) Introduction to history of the camera and the photographic medium. Introduction to photography history, overview of prominent early photographers. Technical introduction to camera basics.
4 (Module I: History of Photography & Contemporary Photography) Exploring the state of photography in today’s world by examining contemporary photographers and their work. Presentations for Project 01 / Roundtable discussion on contemporary photography
5 (Module II: Photography Workflow & Studio Photography) Photoshop and Lightroom workshop.
6 (Module II: Photography Workflow & Studio Photography) Advanced editing workshop. Introduction to practical camera basics.
7 (Module II: Photography Workflow & Studio Photography) Introduction to artificial lighting. Presentations for Project 02
8 (Module III: Found Image & Curation) Introduction to found image and its ethics. Exploring artworks made using recycling found images. I’ll be sharing my methodology on developing a concept, and finding sources of found imagery.
9 (Module III: Found Image & Curation) Introduction to curating and exhibiting photography. Tips on effective curatorial practices. Presentations for Midterm Project
10 (Module IV: Photobook) Introduction to the photobook and its history. Overview of contemporary examples.
11 (Module IV: Photobook) Indesign workshop. Introduction to photobook design essentials
12 (Module IV: Photobook) Presentations of concepts/ ideas for the final project. Feedback session. Presentations for concepts/ ideas for the Final Project
13 Final Project Check up 2/ Production Preview Students will be expected to show a mock up of their final projects. Feedback session, technical assistance.
