Course Name Code Semester T+A+L (hour/week) Type (C / O) Local Credit ECTS
Molecular Basis of Cancer MBG 421 Spring 03+00+00 Compulsory 3 5
Academic Unit: Molecular Biology and Genetics
Mode of Delivery: Face to face
Prerequisites: None
Language of Instruction: English
Level of Course Unit: Undergraduate
Course Coordinator: - -
Course Objectives: This course focuses on the molecular biology of cancer and introduces models and techniques used to study cancer. The hallmarks of cancer cells will be explained, and how they change the cellular processes and metabolic pathways will be analyzed.
Course Contents: cancer genome, oncogenes, tumor suppressor genes, model organisms in cancer studies, cancer stem cells, cancer microenvironment, cell cycle in cancer cells, apoptosis, necrosis, autophagy, senescence, cancer metabolism, carcinogenesis, metastasis, angiogenesis
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- understanding carcinogenesis and cancer genetics
  • 2- recognizing the hallmarks of cancer cells
  • 3- exploring the models and techniques used in cancer studies
  • 4- molecular basis of cancer therapy
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods:  PowerPoint presentations, which are also shared with the students through the KHAS Learn platform, will introduce the concepts.  Watching mechanistic/explanatory videos during lectures and discussing with students.  Discussion with the students during the lecture. Questions integrating the previously covered lectures into ongoing lecture content will allow students better understand how the concepts are related to each other.  JoVE platform, selected review/ research articles will support the course content and help students review the lecture and visualize the subject.
