Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to:
1. Develop a basic skill for correctly reading rhythmic notation
2. Identify and write key signatures, major scales and the three forms of minor scales
3. Identify and write major, minor, diminished and augmented chords
4. Identify and write intervals
5. Harmonize and analyze the chordal structure of simple melodies
Course Contents: The study of fundamentals in elementary theory of music, note reading, rhythm, key signatures, major scales, letter names, bass clef and treble clef. Sight-singing is integrated with the conducting of simple song forms
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- Identify and write major and minor scales and key signatures, intervals, triads, & seventh chords.
  • 2- Name and understand the function of chords in harmonic progressions in music
  • 3- Write coherent, singable melodies that follow the principles we have discovered in studying melodies
  • 4- Sing new melodies at sight and notate new melodies & rhythms from dictation
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: Teaching: Lecture and discussion - 3 hours / week
Learning: Synchronous and asynchronous reading and writing tasks completed both individually and in groups.
