Course Objectives: The objectives of this course include: 1) expanding students’ knowledge and understanding of the forces that shape cities and design, specifically through infectious diseases; 2) enhancing students’ ability to analyze urban conditions, architectural and interior designs critically; 3) developing students’ ability to formulate, conduct, and document urban and architectural research; 4) to enhance students’ familiarity with interdisciplinary research; 5) to sharpen students’ research and presentation skills.
Course Contents: History of diseases and public health is generally addressed through institutions and medical professionals, yet how places of treatment and public health measures are spatialized is often overlooked. This course surveys infectious diseases such as plague, syphilis, cholera, and tuberculosis, and their impact in the urban environment, design, and everyday life. Leading themes include: places of treatment (hospitals, quarantine spaces, and dispensaries), spatialization of preventive practices, the development of health infrastructure and adaptation of design, visibility of infectious diseases in public spaces, and lived experience of health in the urban environment. The course emphasizes the intersection of social, economic, political, geographic, and environmental conditions that gave rise to epidemics and preventive measures in Europe, the United States, and Turkey, beginning from the 14th century to the present day. The course format includes lectures and discussions of readings, and student research presentations. The interdisciplinary nature of urban history, design, and the history of medicine is stressed throughout the course.
