Cell and Tissue Culture MBG 419 Fall 03+00+00 Elective 3 5
Academic Unit: Molecular Biology and Genetics
Mode of Delivery: Face to face
Prerequisites: -
Language of Instruction: English
Level of Course Unit: Undergraduate
Course Coordinator: - -
Course Objectives: To teach the standard methods used in cell and tissue culture as a powerful tool to investigate the biology of cells, especially in drug discovery.
Course Contents:  Animal Cell Culture  Biology and Microscopy of Cultured Cells  Basic Cell Culture Equipment, Reagents, and Techniques  Aseptic Technique, Sterilization, and introduction to GCCP  Maintenance of Cell Lines  Cell Line Characterization  Fundamentals of Cancer Cell Culture  Functional Assays in Cell Culture  Cell Culture Contamination  3D Cell Culture  Culture of Specific Cell Types
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- discovering the past, present, and future of cell and tissue culture studies
  • 2- getting familiar with the requirements, instruments, and techniques of cell and tissue culture laboratories
  • 3- understanding the fundamentals of cancer cell culture
  • 4- developing troubleshooting skills
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods:  PowerPoint presentations, including important images and daily examples about the subject, which are also shared with the students through the KHAS Learn platform.  Explaining the concepts on the board (students can take photos).  Watching mechanistic/explanatory videos during lectures and discussing with students.  Discussion with the students during the lecture. Questions integrating the previously covered lectures into ongoing lecture content will allow students better understand how the concepts are related to each other.  JoVE platform, selected review/ research articles will support the course content and help students review the lecture and visualize the subject.
