Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course the student should be able to: 1. Have a solid understanding of the musical language to be able to express yourself fluently with other professionals 2. Have composed several projects for a small ensemble 3. Be familiar with the melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, structural, composing and arranging techniques particular to this idiom. 4. Be able to deal with the specified technical areas of functional and non-functional harmonization
Course Contents: The objective of this course is to introduce and develop a fundamental knowledge of jazz and contemporary music harmony, vocabulary and structure through the analysis of nomenclature, harmony, melody, rhythm and form. The student will also learn basic composing and arranging skills for the small ensembles using techniques that are common in jazz and contemporary music idiom.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- Learn principles of chord progressions , analysis and exploration of functional and non-functional harmony
  • 2- Internalize a systematic approach to the art of composing in the jazz and contemporary music idiom
  • 3- Emphasis on contemporary harmonic concepts to enable students to write and analyze compositions in the style of jazz and contemporary music idiom
  • 4- Application techniques of functional and non-functional harmonic structures
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: Teaching: Lecture and discussion - 3 hours / week Learning: Synchronous and asynchronous reading and writing tasks completed both individually and in groups.
