Course Objectives: This course is designed to increase awareness and appreciation of the complexity and magnificence of the symbolic system of language that enables human communication. The main objective of the course is to introduce a general overview of the human language phenomenon and the underlying cognitive mechanisms.
Course Contents: This course surveys important and recent research about how humans process, learn and use language in different settings. We will discuss how children learn and use languages, how language is processed by adults, and how language is used in social settings such as family and work environments. We will also spend some time on discussing the implications for interesting topics such as multilingualism and language delays/disorders.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- understand the fundamentals, major concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings in the field of psycholinguistics
  • 2- grasp major theories of language production and processing
  • 3- get acquainted with the neurobiology of language and the related language disorders
  • 4- critically evaluate empirical findings in the field of psychology of language
Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: With lecture and discussion format students will be knowledgeable about subjects and be open to discussions. Students will have extensive readings and will be able to critically evaluate research findings.
