Course Objectives: This course aims to: • extend students’ awareness of audiovisual culture, • examine film within the contexts of production and consumption, • challenge the usual conventions of what can be considered a “film.”, • build an appreciation of the various kinds of audiovisual material the students will be analyzing and producing during their four years in the department.
Course Contents: This survey course will cover the period from the silent era to the end of WWII filmmaking, taking into account the socio-political, economic and cultural backgrounds of different movements and styles. Classes will be supported by film screenings.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- show an awareness of the practice of film and cultural history,
  • 2- place and analyse films within their production and consumption contexts,
  • 3- describe and illustrate the growth of classical, formal and narrative conventions,
  • 4- reflect on the key themes, films, sources, and historical events covered in the unit through a continuous and incremental process of self-reflection and analysis during every seminar.
