Course Objectives: Extend students’ awareness of film and cultural history, position films within their historical contexts of production and consumption, examine issues and arguments surrounding the growth of standard formal and narrative film conventions, build an appreciation of the history of world cinema from the end of WWII to the present through regular attendance and participation in seminars
Course Contents: This survey course will cover the period from the silent era to the end of WWII filmmaking, taking into account the socio-political, economic and cultural backgrounds of different movements and styles. Classes will be supported by film screenings.
Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO):
  • 1- Show an awareness of the practice of film and cultural history
  • 2- Be able to place and analyze films within their historical contexts of production and consumption
  • 3- Be able to describe and illustrate the growth of classical, formal and narrative conventions
  • 4- Be able to demonstrate knowledge of key themes, films, sources, and historical events covered in the unit
  • 5- Be able to demonstrate ability to form stylistic connections between differentperiods of film history
