| Course Objectives: |
This course aims at introducing the origins, theory and the practice of international institutions in world politics, with a particular focus on their raison d?etat, memberships, institutional structures and political processes. This course is designed to equip the students with an understanding of the role of international institutions in the international system, including their impact on providing regional/global peace and security as well as managing inter-economic, political, cultural, societal and functional relations. |
| Course Contents: |
The international organizations introduced in this course range from the Ancient Greek establishments to the United Nations, from the European Union to the African Union, from the Bretton Woods institutions to the Amnesty International. Due to its scope and importance, the workings and the performance of the UN, as well as regionalist trend of international organizations are amongst the highlights of this course. |
| Learning Outcomes of the Course Unit (LO): |
- 1- demonstrate a thorough grasp of the literature on international institutions
- 2- understand the theoretical and empirical aspects of the study of international organizations
- 3- identify which international organizations fulfil which political, economic, societal, cultural and technical functions
- 4- criticize the impact on international institutions on regional/global issues
- 5- compare the role of the other actors in international relations with the role of international institutions
- 6- write well-organized and critical essays on international organizations

| Planned Learning Activities and Teaching Methods: |
Students are expected to read the required texts and prepare for each class, and submit two short papers (one movie review and one article review). Apart from those requirements, students will also be assessed through one-mid term and one final exam, as well as three quizzes. |
